Do you know what day it is?
It’s National Hammock Day, National Rat Catcher’s Day, and also National Penuche (“panucci”) Fudge Day! I know it’s Sunday, July 22…but it’s so much more. And did you know that last Tuesday was National Yellow Pig Day? Yeah, me neither. I did Google it. Fascinating.
Last week you may have missed lollipop, peach ice cream, I Love Horses, and caviar days. For every day of the year, there are at least 4 organizations, movements, and specialty groups who’ve claimed the day for their cause, food, game, hobby or more and what about the days that commemorate the birth or accomplishment of significant people?
Here’s the deal, no matter what day it is, we can always know what day it really is…it’s the day the Lord has made, right?
Today is that day. God has a lot to say about our days and how we should go about them. I’m sure you remember that one of the commandments gets a day to itself. The 4th commandment was all about what His people were to do or not do on the 7th day. From the opening words to the final revelation, God has given us days to mark the moment we’re in and days to anticipate the fulfillment of his promises yet to come.
The thing is, today is just another in the pile of moments that you have been given that will add up to define who you are because it is what you do with today that ultimately defines you.
David wrote it beautifully, “all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” and also, “O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am!”
Today is the day the Lord has made. From sunrise to sunset, it’s His and it’s ours and we should have the same sobering mindset of David who felt the weight of each day and the same passion as Peter who dropped everything to surrender every day to Jesus.
Let’s be people who consider the impact of our days, the priority of our days, and the purpose of our days.
Ask God to teach you to number our days that you may have a heart of wisdom. Ask that He would mature you in how you value each day He gives you. Pray that you would be convicted and repentant when you squander your days. This is my prayer too.
