Rhymes with Deer Bread – AKA Venison Bread
UPDATED 3/24/2020 – with a fun story at the end of the recipe…read on.
I shared this recipe a while back on my devotionals page with the following thoughts…
"Flour is bland at best and really inedible eaten by the cupful. Sugar, while sweet, is too much to take straight by the cup. Leavening is awfully bitter tasting and salt would make you sick if you ate it by the spoonful. But each ingredient comes together for something wonderfully satisfying. The next time you’re not sure if the situations in your life are going to work out, bake some bread and thank God for each individual ingredient and remember that when you’re called according to His purposes, He makes all things beautiful in their time.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 “God makes all things beautiful in their time.”

Here's the recipe…
Ingredients
- 3 C flour You can substitue self-rising flour – just omit the baking powder and reduce salt to 1/2 tsp
- 4½ tsp baking powder
- 1½ tsp kosher salt – so good to bring out the flavors of the deer
- 1 can dark venison (12oz) For the love, do not use 12oz of venison. Read the notes below
- ⅓ C sugar – it really helps cover the gamey flavor of the venison you better now have used. I use demerara sugar for a really rich caramelly taste. So good!
- ¼ C melted butter
- 2 T honey
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375°
-
Mix dry ingredients
-
Add wet ingredients to the dry mix – reserving 1/2 of the melted butter
-
Blend until JUST combined – don't overmix. The batter will be lumpy
-
Spoon into greased or parchement paper lined loaf pan – makes one large, 3 small, or 6 mini – I prefer the small loaf pans
-
Pour melted butter over the top
-
Bake for 55 minutes or until top is dark brown and crunchy
Recipe Notes
Slice when cool and serve warm with butter and honey – or my bacon jam! Bacon Jam Recipe. Freezes well: Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and then in foil. Keep in freezer to have on hand any time.

— UPDATE: — WHAT’S UP WITH THE NAME FOR THIS BREAD?
Ok, so about 24 hours after I shared this recipe originally (3/23/2020) entitled “Honey B – E – E – R Bread” on Facebook, they flagged the post and removed it. Well, their robots did. They sent me automated script on how to contest the decision to remove my post for violating their community standards and because I know with all this stuff going on right now with the virus they are low on actual humans to police and stay on top of their usual offending community rule violating suspects (you know like people who post politically and religiously conservative views) Since the original recipe had the word for a fermented grain beverage that is regulated by the Ay-Tee-Eff it was flagged for appearing to solicit sales for said beverage without a license…anywhoo…Instead of leaving my post completely unavailable I decided to simply rename the recipe Venison Bread because venison is another word for deer and deer rhymes with – well, you know…that drink I can’t post – and voila, here you are now reading it and hopefully giving it a try in your own kitchen. I hope you do.
I really should have made the recipe and had it specifically call for that brand of deer we all now love, Corona – then I would have been in even more trouble.

Seriously. Dumb. I’m actually in Facebook jail as I type this! They took it up to another level and banned me for 24 hours. Even though I had removed the original post and edited it to change the word beer, they still flagged the new post because the photo was the same. Un.Be.Leev.Able!!!
