Pro Tip: Don’t.
Have you ever worn shapewear? You know, like Spanx or a girdle or tight leggings that come up past your belly button to your…well, your parts you don’t want squished? I have, and no matter how squeezy, squishy, or snug I get those Spanx, some part that I wanted tucked in seems to bulge out.
Don’t let your Bible study time to be like the blob that slipped out when you were trying to squeeze everything in.
Fitting something in always ends up feeling like squeezing into a pair of Spanx shapewear.
Don’t fit Bible study into your schedule. Rethink that.
If time in the Word is a priority to you – and I’m pretty sure it is or you wouldn’t have been curious about this title…
If your plate is already full – and I know it is because, well, hello! You’re alive!
Squeezing study in isn’t going to work.
You need to ease before you squeeze.
Yep.
You can quote me on that.
Ease up on something. Set yourself up for success by taking an honest look at your day, make a plan, and choose your time. Don’t keep thinking that somehow magically your 168 hours will multiply like loaves and fish and you’ll somehow get your study done without being intentional with your time.
You have the same 168 hours a week that I do.
Yeah, but you get your study done because that’s your job…
Uh-huh. I’ve heard that before. I get it. I’m a pastor. I have aaaaalll the time in the world to read and study my Bible. Yeah. Nope.
But, here’s the deal…
I look at the time I have, and I make certain things non-negotiable – brushing my teeth, for example. I make time for that. You’re welcome. Wearing clothing, brushing my hair, and dabbing on some makeup also rank up there in the priorities of how I’ll spend my time.
I know that I feel better, think clearer, engage much better when I am in the Word, so it’s not time spend because it’s my job – I do it because I’m better for it.
I don’t squeeze in. Instead, I’ve eased my scheduled such that Bible study is a priority.
Like brushing my teeth, it’s something I won’t do without, and the world is a better place because of it!
I know you have a lot on your plate…you do, I get it. It’s a lot with work and family and your health and staying current on the latest episode of Sister Wives…it’s a lot. If you’re also fitting in Bible study time, I want to encourage you to rethink that.
Don’t fit Bible study into your already busy schedule…rethink, don’t squeeze, ease, and make it a priority.
Here’s some quick tips:
- Make time in the Word a priority – even higher than brushing your teeth. Put your Bible right next to your toothbrush and toothpaste. That’s a great visual cue in the morning to open the Word and not let the day speed by without that time.
- Make an appointment with yourself. An appointment, you know, just like you’d make an appointment to get your hair done. Keep that appointment to be in the Word.
- Bonus: Ask a friend to join you. It’s so much better to have a partner!
